April is National Donate Life Month.

Penn Highlands Healthcare proudly supports the efforts of CORE, the Center for Organ Recovery & Education, to increase the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors.

Being a donor is life-saving. Though we do not perform transplants at our hospitals, we see patients before and after transplants, and we know the need is very real.

Nationally, more than 110,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant at any time. At least 18 people will die each day without receiving it, and someone new is added to the list every 12 minutes.

Spreading the word about the need about organ donations is important. One person can save up to eight lives, but only a fraction of the population  opt to donate their organs should something happen.

Throughout April, people will be in the lobbies of the Penn Highlands hospitals with information, posters will be displayed and different events will be held within the hospitals.

To be a donor, mark the “organ donor” box on the computer screen when getting a new driver’s license, or go to www.donatelife-pa.org
