Support Groups

The death of a loved one can be a traumatic experience physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. Bereavement support groups offer a comfortable setting where a person who has experienced a loss can find caring, comfort, support and information in a confidential atmosphere. Contact our Hospice office at 1-800-841-9397 for more information on bereavement support.

Camp Flutterbye: Support for Children and Teens

Childhood grief left to itself can grow to become one of the most destructive adult burdens. Penn Highlands Community Nurses offers a free two-day grief camp for children and teens, grades K-12, each summer. Camp Flutterbye is facilitated by bereavement professionals who provide an enjoyable and supportive environment where campers may freely express their feelings and learn new ways to cope.

Our camp is usually held in St. Marys in June. There is no charge for camp. For more information on Camp Flutterbye please call us at 814-781-4722 or 1-800-841-9397.

Helping Understand Grief Stages, or HUGS, for Kids and Teens is a support group that meets each spring at the Central Resource Center, or CRC, located on the campus of Penn Highlands DuBois West in DuBois. This group, which is free for participants, offers a six week program for children and teens to meet with peers who have similar experiences.

Group facilitators separate the participants by age group, organize activities to memorialize the deceased and give the young people an opportunity to speak openly about their feelings.

Ostomy Support Group

The Ostomy Support Group of Penn Highlands Healthcare meets from noon to 1 PM on the first Tuesday of the month from April to June and September to November at 440 Front Street, Clearfield, PA.

The support group provides emotional support and useful information for individuals living with an ostomy. It is a unique support group not only in the Penn Highlands Healthcare system but in the country. There are less than 400 nationwide.

People who are living with this type of medical device need to know that they are not alone - there is support available, and that's why we started this support group back in 2007. Many of our members are surprised to learn that one million Americans are living with an ostomy, and that many famous people had one too, such as Ed Sullivan, Bob Hope and Fred Astaire.

A registered nurse who is certified in wound, ostomy and continence care, leads the group. The Ostomy Support Group meetings are informal, round-table discussions on topics of interest, new product demonstrations and question-and-answer sessions.

There is no fee to attend. For more information, please call 814-768-2025.
