GI Lab

The GI Lab Is A Specialized Unit

The GI Lab is a specialized unit within Penn Highlands DuBois used specifically for procedures involving the digestive tract, such as those that affect the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas and small and large intestine or colon.

Gastroenterologists, physicians with advanced training in diagnosing and treating digestive diseases, examine patients using endoscopes. An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a camera at the tip that is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus in order to provide images of the upper digestive tract. GI Lab physicians also perform colonoscopies, a procedure that allows them to see the inside of the large intestine to screen for colon cancer or other conditions.

These procedures are also done in the operating rooms of other Penn Highlands Healthcare hospitals, or at the Endocscopy Center located in the DuBois Community Medical Building.

Because anesthesia is used during these procedures, your physician will choose the best location for your procedure based on your medical history.
