Maternal Care at Penn Highlands Healthcare

Penn Highlands Healthcare takes the arrival of your newest family member very seriously. With Maternity Units in two locations, our smallest patients are our biggest priority.

The Maternity Units provide a home-like feeling with soft lighting and private rooms. But don’t be fooled by how it looks. The most up-to-date equipment and evidence-based practices are in place. Moms can stay in one room from admission, through labor and delivery until discharged. (If there is a need for cesarean delivery, moms do go to our specially equipped operating rooms nearby.)

For mom’s comfort, we use various ways to ease labor pain. We offer the use of birthing balls which can help get a baby to the correct position and cut down on back strain. We also have peanut balls which can help reduce labor pains, and Jacuzzi tubs are available, too. Should a mom choose to have an epidural, our competent Anesthesia Department is here to help.

During labor, we know that moms-to-be like to be able to walk and move. The Maternal and Child Center’s Maternity Units are happy to provide patients the Monica Novii wireless monitoring system. We use this small, reliable and accurate fetal heart rate monitor that is beltless and cordless. It also records the maternal heart rate and that is watched in real time by our team of obstetrics nurses.

Following births, we practice skin-to-skin following delivery. This improves a baby’s heart and lung function, stabilizes baby’s body temperature and regulars baby’s blood sugars.

We also encourage the Golden Hour after delivery with just the mom and significant other in the room with the newborn to maximize bonding. We also have quiet time daily from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM daily to allow parents to relax.

Maternity Unit at Penn Highlands DuBois

With more than 1,000 births per year, the PH DuBois Maternity Unit sees more celebrations of life and happy experiences than any other department in the hospital. It’s a place where mothers can entrust their care and the care of one of the most important people in their lives – their newborn babies.

Located on the third floor of PH DuBois West, the unit consists of private rooms where the mother spends her entire stay in the same room with baby at her side. Just like home, the room also has a rocker, and a small dining table and chairs for families to share their first meal together.

In situations of high risk pregnancies or those threatened by complications, women have the reassurance of a premiere team to provide optimal care. The on-staff perinatologist (high-risk pregnancy doctor) and neonatologist (high-risk baby doctor) both work closely with the obstetric, pediatric and family practice physicians.

Safety and a healthy baby is of utmost priority when caring for the woman in labor. With central fetal monitoring equipment to monitor the baby's heart rate and the mother's contractions, staff can observe the mom and baby before the birth from the main desk at all times.

Hours of study by the maternity nurses and their various certifications in the American Heart Association’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Life Support Obstetrics and In-patient Obstetrics are highly beneficial in building a critical care nursing team.

The staff also regularly attends obstetrical emergency simulation training and drills, which offer ongoing updates to assessment skills and proper management techniques, including blood loss monitoring to prevent complications for moms.
