Remove Age Spots with JOULE™ Laser

Are age spots aging you? Even before crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines emerge, you may start to notice age spots—also called sun spots or liver spots (although they have nothing to do with the organ). These flat areas of darker pigmentation—most often found on the face, chest and hands—are caused by prolonged exposure to the sun’s UVA rays.

Age spots can take as long as 10 to 20 years to develop. That means, unless you’ve been vigilant about sun protection your entire life, age spots could start to crop up as early as your 30s. Fortunately, there is a solution—the JOULE laser system.

How Does JOULE™ Laser Age Spot Removal Work?

Age spots are merely dark areas of skin that have been damaged by the sun. They are harmless, except for making you look older than you are. With the JOULE laser system, J. Ryan Rice, MD, FACS, uses concentrated light beams to gently heat the top layers of skin where the unwanted pigmentation has formed. The light therapy stimulates the cells to regenerate—this time without extra pigmentation.

What to Expect with JOULE™ Age Spot Removal

Dr. Rice removes age spots in his Penn Highlands Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery office in DuBois. The procedure takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. The number of necessary sessions varies from patient to patient, but most people start to notice clearer, more even skin after the first treatment.

After laser therapy, you may experience some redness that will go away after a few hours. You’ll need to avoid sunlight or cover up and wear sunscreen until your skin has completely healed, usually within three to four days. Otherwise, you can return to your regular activities immediately following treatment. What are you waiting for? Start looking your age again!
