Dr. Matthew Varacallo's Story
I treat my patients with the ultimate blend of commitment, precision, biology and technology.
Matthew Varacallo, MD, MBA, FAAOS, has healing in his blood. Growing up in DuBois, PA, he admired his father who is a family medicine physician. When he completed his residency and a fellowship, it was only natural that he returned to the DuBois region to practice.
“It was the opportunity of a lifetime to join the staff at Penn Highlands Healthcare,” said Dr. Matt as he is affectionately known by his patients. “Penn Highlands does a great job of reaching many regions and giving people access to specialized care. At this health system, I’ve had the opportunity to build something incredibly special.”
Dr. Matt is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and total join reconstruction, accelerated rehabilitation protocols and functional return to sports after surgeries and procedures. He is also the health system’s Director of Orthopedic Robotic Surgery.
“I like working with the patient population in this region – they are the salt of the earth people. Plus there is a huge radius of high schools and colleges where the students in their athletic programs benefit from the care I provide,” said the cutting edge surgeon.
Dr. Matt is known for many innovative procedures. He uses an arthroscopic procedure to treat early arthritis in the knee and pioneered a Fertilized ACL procedure that helps to speed the recovery process. In addition, he was a member of a team that developed an opioid-free ACL surgery protocol for young athletes.
“I view orthopedic care as a partnership. I apply my knowledge base and skills to educate my patients and give them the tools to help them get to a better phase of their lives. I tell my patients that I’m going to get you out there stronger than you were before.”
