Rehabilitation Restores Function And Health
The Rehabilitation Center
Rehabilitation medicine helps people recover from illness, injury, or surgery and regain independence after experiencing disability. There are several types of rehabilitation. The most common are outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. The Rehabilitation Center of Penn Highlands Healthcare offers these therapies plus specialized services for all ages, conditions, and abilities.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Rehabilitation Care?
Nearly everyone can benefit from rehabilitation before, during, or after an injury, surgery, illness, or health condition. Rehabilitation services include physical therapy to help patients regain movement, strength, coordination, and motor skills. Occupational therapy is similar but focused on skills for daily living and work. Speech therapy helps restore brain (cognitive), speech and swallowing skills as well helping children with language-related learning issues such as speaking, listening and writing.
Outpatient physical therapy also can be used to help prevent injuries by strengthening muscles and correcting posture while engaged in activities. Those born with a disability who want to gain independence also can benefit from outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy. Some patients participate in multiple types of therapy, depending on their functional needs and condition.
If you are unsure about whether you could benefit from rehabilitation, talk to your doctor or call Rehabilitation Services at 814-375-3053.
Inpatient vs. Outpatient Therapy Options
At all 19 of our outpatient centers, we provide a range of services and therapies for individuals of all ages. Specialty therapy is offered on an outpatient basis at certain locations. These therapies may include feeding therapy for young children, hand therapy, LSVT LOUD and BIG therapies for patients with Parkinson’s disease, pelvic floor therapy, aquatic therapy, and a wheelchair clinic.
For those who need more intensive or frequent therapy to regain independence, we offer inpatient rehabilitation at a dedicated unit on the fifth floor of Penn Highlands DuBois. Our physical therapists work with patients several times a day to restore enough function to return home where they can continue their healing. Inpatient therapy helps patients who have experienced trauma, amputation, stroke, or another illness that may have caused weakness and physical or cognitive changes. These conditions include stroke, arthritis, brain injury, burns, cancer, cardiac disorders, debility, Guillain-Barre syndrome, hip fracture, joint replacement, multiple sclerosis, neurological disease, Parkinson’s disease, nerve disorders, and spinal cord injury.
Tours of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit are available for patients and family. Please call 814-375-3053 to schedule one.
