MVH is a Healthgrades Five-Star Recipient for Pacemaker Procedures

Monongahela Valley Hospital is 5-star rated for pacemaker procedure outcomes according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data. For its 2021 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance (5-stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), as a group, and found: From 2017-2019, patients having cardiac pacemaker implants in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average a 56.2% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.* From 2017-2019, patients having cardiac pacemaker Implants in hospitals receiving 1-star are, on average 2.3 times more likely to experience one or more complications than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars.*

"The Healthgrades 5-Star rating proves that members of our community can remain in the Mon Valley region to safely have pacemaker implants performed by the medical professionals they know and trust at Monongahela Valley Hospital," explained Louis J. Panza Jr., MVH's president and CEO.

The Healthgrades analysis shows that patients treated at hospitals receiving a 5-star rating have a lower risk of dying and a lower risk of experiencing one or more complications during a hospital stay than if they were treated at hospitals receiving a 1-star rating in that procedure or condition. From 2017 through 2019, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average, 218,785 lives could potentially have been saved and complications in 148,681 patients could potentially have been avoided.*

This rating is particularly important when people are researching the procedure and its anticipated outcomes.

"Hospital quality has never been more important, and consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of researching where they receive care before they visit a hospital for a specific procedure or condition," said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer at Healthgrades. "Hospitals that receive a Healthgrades 5-star rating for pacemaker procedures demonstrate exceptional outcomes and their ability to provide quality care for patients."

The Healthgrades 5-Star rating for pacemaker procedure outcomes is just one of the national cardiac distinctions MVH has received. The other recognition includes being named "One of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention" (2020) by Healthgrades and a "Best Hospital in Heart Failure" by U.S. News & World Report. MVH also received the Women's Choice Award™ for being "One of America's Best Hospitals for Heart Care," the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With the Guidelines® Heart Failure Gold Plus Achievement Award and the American Heart Association's Mission Lifeline Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award.
