Penn Highlands Mon Valley Expands Services

When the affiliation between Penn Highlands Healthcare and Monongahela Valley Hospital began in October 2021, several opportunities were identified to help the hospital regain sustainability. Penn Highlands Healthcare is committed to ensuring that the communities served by Penn Highlands Mon Valley have convenient access to high-quality primary and specialty services.

Since the hospital joined the health system, some existing service lines expanded and new specialties have been introduced.

PH Mon Valley

Cardiology

Cardiology services are now more accessible in the Mon Valley region. With the opening of Penn Highlands Cardiology in Monongahela, Adil Waheed, DO, a board-certified interventional cardiologist, delivers a new level of advanced cardiac care to the community. Dr. Waheed specializes in diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease, vascular disease, structural heart disease and congenital heart defects.

Family Medicine

Penn Highlands Family Medicine — Rostraver Township recently increased both the number of providers and the office space in the Mon Valley HealthPlex. With the addition of three family medicine physicians, Ereny Eskarous, MD, Stephanie C. Okorie, MD, and Krishna Parikh, MD, as well as advanced practice providers, family medicine has expanded to be offered in two suites -- 210 and 290 -- to provide even more convenient care to patients. Plus, the Penn Highlands Family Medicine office located in Suite 210 offers walk-in hours Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for the community.

In addition, a new primary care office opened on Country Club Road in Carroll Township. Varun Dobariya, MD, a fellowship-trained physician who specializes in internal medicine, diagnoses and treats a broad and comprehensive spectrum of illnesses that affect adults.

Interventional Radiology

Throughout Pennsylvania, interventional radiology is one of the fastest evolving specialties and it is changing the way many diseases, health conditions and injuries are diagnosed and treated. The addition of Waqar Shah, MD, a board-certified interventional radiologist, to the medical staff is enabling the hospital to broaden the scope of interventions offered and thus permits people to remain close to home and receive interventional care at PH Mon Valley.

Neurosciences

Penn Highlands Healthcare has a reputation for expert neurology in Northwestern/Central Pennsylvania, and now people in the Southwestern region have access to leading neurologists. Ghassan Bejjani, MD, a respected neurosurgeon, joined the PH Mon Valley staff which enables the hospital to provide highly specialized care for neurosurgical conditions including simple and complex brain and spine procedures.

Oncology

The Hahne Cancer Center at Penn Highlands Mon Valley earned a reputation for offering advanced radiation oncology therapies and now the Center expanded its surgical and interventional oncology services to treat liver and colon cancers, among others. The surgeries and procedures, which were previously only available at major academic centers, enable people to receive a high level of care close to home from medical professionals they know and trust. Zachary Senders, MD, a board-certified surgeon who offers highly specialized multidisciplinary surgical cancer care, recently performed the Whipple procedure, which is surgery to treat tumors and other conditions of the pancreas, small intestine and bile ducts.

Orthopedics

Penn Highlands Orthopedics and Sports Medicine continually evolves to meet the needs of patients in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The practice recently welcomed three new board-certified orthopedic surgeons, including David Sheba, DO, Justin Sheba, DO, and Justin A. Zenner, DO, The new orthopedic surgeons offer people in the region innovative procedures including minimally invasive surgery.

Pulmonology

Outpatients now have access to quality lung care with the introduction of Penn Highlands Lung Center in Rostraver Township. Staffed by board-certified pulmonary care physician Jan. W. Madison, MD, the new Lung Center is providing services to patients with all types of pulmonary issues.

Vascular Surgery

For three consecutive years, Luke K. Marone, MD, FACS, has been named a Pittsburgh Best Doctor. Now employed by Penn Highlands Healthcare, this board-certified vascular surgeon is helping Penn Highlands Mon Valley expand its vascular surgery services in the region.
