Prenatal Education

Prenatal Education at Penn Highlands

There are three classes that can be taken before baby arrives.

One-Day Prenatal Class

Giving birth can be a demanding and physically exhausting process. Penn Highlands DuBois offers pre-natal training to minimize a mother’s effort through education and stress-reducing techniques. All pre-natal classes are taught by nurses who have had years of experience and expert training.

Classes include:

  • Minor pregnancy discomforts/relief remedies
  • Emotional changes
  • Fetal well-being
  • Fetal testing
  • Stages of labor and the birthing process
  • Comfort measures
  • Coach’s role/mother’s role
  • Pain control
  • Breathing/relaxation techniques (natural methods)
  • Medications/epidurals
  • Cesarean birth
  • NICU/unexpected outcomes
  • Postpartum
  • Hospital tour
  • Newborn characteristics and procedures
  • Infant safety and injury prevention
  • Newborn care

Because classes fill quickly, it is best to register by the end of your sixth month of pregnancy. Cost is $65, which may be covered by your medical coverage/private insurance. Scholarships are available for those who meet eligibility requirements.

Feeding Class

This in depth class covers many topics to educate and support parents who plan to, or are considering breast feeding their baby. The class fee is $10, unless already participating in prenatal education classes. We encourage all parents, no matter their feeding choice, to attend this class to explore the benefits of breastfeeding, as well as receive important safety/car seat instructions from a Pennsylvania State Trooper.

New Baby Camp

This class is offered to children ages 2-8 who are expecting a new brother or sister. Included is a tour of the Maternity Unit and age-based education to help siblings prepare for the arrival of a new baby. The class is free of charge and scheduled every other month.
