Dr. James Lieb’s Story

Tailoring care to the patient’s needs.

“It is exciting to have Penn Highlands State College in this community,” said James Lieb, DO, a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist with Penn Highlands Oncology/Hematology, who was born and raised in Houserville, PA and currently lives two blocks from his “old family homestead.”

“Penn Highlands State College gives people in the region another healthcare option – and for me it has given me the opportunity to be part of a new hospital,” he said with enthusiasm.

Dr. Lieb was born and raised in State College. During the seven years he was in the U.S. Navy, he served as a Hospital Corpsman who provided healthcare to sailors and their families. His time in the Navy led to his career in medicine.

“The choice of oncology and hematology was personal for me,” he explained. “My mother had ovarian cancer and my sister had cancer of the head and neck. Plus, the work/life balance it affords is a good fit.”

He continued, “With oncology and hematology, every patient needs to be treated in a special fashion. Because every tumor is different, every patient receives specified and individualized care.”

“I truly enjoy the doctor/patient interaction. Patients open up to physicians more than anyone else. It is a privilege to practice medicine in modern times.”
