Fighting Cancer With Powerful Medicines

Medical Oncology

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, there are a lot of new terms that you will be hearing. Most likely, you have been seen by a medical oncologist or been told you will be treated with medical oncology therapy. Medical oncology is the use of medicines, such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy, to treat cancer. A medical oncologist specializes in using these drugs in certain combinations to best treat your cancer. At Penn Highlands, your medical oncologist also may be the primary doctor overseeing your cancer care. In addition to medical oncologists, cancer patients may be seen by surgeons who specialize in removing cancer tumors and radiation oncologists who use radiation to treat cancer tumors.

What Is Medical Oncology?

When you are diagnosed with cancer, you may be referred directly to a surgeon then be seen by a medical oncologist. Or you may be referred first to a medical oncologist. Medical oncologists specialize in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating cancer. Your medical oncologist will begin by meeting with you to explain your diagnosis and establish treatment goals. He or she will then build a customized cancer treatment plan that will outline the type or types of treatment you’ll have, a timeline of treatment, and also how your body’s response to treatment will be evaluated.

If chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy (also called precision medicine) is part of your treatment plan, your Penn Highlands medical oncologist will determine the type of medicine, the number and frequency of treatments, and the combination or sequence of medicines to be used. This cancer doctor also may refer you for surgery, radiation therapy, or both.

Your oncologist will provide ongoing follow-up care to monitor your status, including helping you cope with the side effects of treatment and assessing how your cancer is responding to treatment.

What Is the Best Treatment for Cancer?

Cancer treatment is highly individualized. There is no single best treatment for all types of cancer. Different treatments work better on some cancers than others. And some treatments may work better in one person than another who has the same type of cancer. That’s why it’s so important to find a skilled medical oncologist like the ones we have at Penn Highlands who can design a treatment plan that’s best for you. At Penn Highlands, we offer a full range of cancer treatments, including medical oncology, so you don’t have to leave Central Pennsylvania to get the care you need.
