Veterans Benefits

The Residence at Hilltop is considered a Personal Care Home in the State of Pennsylvania. Because we are "Private Pay" (meaning we do not take Social Security Waivers), a resident may be entitled to "Veterans Aid and Attendance" benefits through the VA.

You must fall under the guidelines in order to be eligible. For example, if your loved one served in the military or is a spouse of a service member, you may be eligible. If one or more of these do not apply to your loved one, call the local VA office and find out what benefits you may be eligible for. It never hurts to inquire! Our Veterans and their spouses worked hard to earn this kind of benefit.

This information has been referenced from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

Under current law, The VA recognizes the following wartime periods to decide eligibility for VA pension benefits:

  • Mexican Border period (May 9, 1916, to April 5, 1917 - for Veterans who served in Mexico, on its borders, or in adjacent waters)
  • World War I (April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918)
  • World War II (December 7, 1941, to December 31, 1946)
  • Korean conflict (June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955)
  • Vietnam War era (February 28, 1961, to May 7, 1975 - for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period. August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975 - for Veterans who served outside the Republic of Vietnam.)
  • Gulf War (August 2, 1990 - through a future date to be set by law or presidential proclamation)

Currently, the rates for maximum benefits are as follows:

  • Veteran with no spouse or dependent: $1,912/ month
  • Married Veteran (2 people): $2,266/ month
  • Surviving Spouse: $1,230/ month

These are the basic guidelines. Please check the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website above or review the guidelines on the Veterans Aid and Attendance Information on the Medicaid Planning Assistance page at the American Council of Aging website.
