Critical Care

Penn Highlands Healthcare offers expert care in critical situations right in your own home town.

For patients who need the most advanced medical care for serious, life-threatening illnesses or injuries, Penn Highlands Healthcare offers care from highly-qualified and dedicated staff at all four locations- Brookville, Clearfield, DuBois and Elk.

Penn Highlands Brookville Medical-Surgical Acute Care treats emergencies requiring acute surgical care, including trauma and acute surgical diseases. Our surgeons rapidly assess your condition and prioritize surgical procedures for safe, fast and effective treatment.

The Extensive Care Unit at Penn Highlands Clearfield provides intermediate care that is more advanced than care required on a regular telemetry floor. In this unit, our expert medical staff closely monitors patients admitted with orthopedic and post-operative surgical needs, patients who require intravenous medication administration, those requiring short-term, uncomplicated ventilator support and pediatric patients requiring continuous cardiorespiratory monitoring.

Penn Highlands DuBois Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a highly-specialized, 15-bed unit dedicated to the needs of adult patients requiring intensive monitoring and patient care services including cardiac, medical and surgical care. The ICU features state-of-the-art medical equipment and a healing, restful environment with 24-hour advanced care provided by our medical experts.

The Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) at Penn Highlands Elk is a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary critical care service intended for patients whose medical conditions require close monitoring. These patients need a more intense level of care and enjoy a more individualized patient-to-nurse ratio.
