Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)

The CVICU at The Heart Center Means Quality Care

At Penn Highlands, The Heart Center’s Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, or CVICU, is committed to providing compassionate and specialized care for you and your family. We know that illness and hospitalization can be a stressful time — especially when it’s something as serious as heart or lung surgery.

The CVICU is a 12-bed unit on the fifth floor of Penn Highlands DuBois designed for the special care of patients having open-heart surgery, cardiac interventions, and vascular and thoracic procedures. Patients are admitted from surgery or the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and stay with us until discharge. Our unit offers critical care for seriously ill patients, intermediate care for those in the days following procedures and complete care for short-stay patients after procedures. It is located on the fifth floor of Penn Highlands DuBois.

When Your Loved One is Admitted

The staff in the CVICU understands that the waiting can seem endless on the day of a procedure, and that families have many questions. The nurse’s primary focus will be on admitting your loved one and ensuring that their condition is stable and they are comfortable, before you will be able to visit. This process may take up to two hours after the surgery, so you should not become alarmed if your wait feels long. It is our goal to have you see your loved one as soon as possible.

Family members are asked to wait in the family waiting room located on the fifth floor near the CVICU, across from the receptionist. That way, the surgeon, case manager or other staff can easily locate you, and you’ll have a quiet, out-of-the-way area to wait. If you need to leave the waiting area to go to the cafeteria the day of surgery, our receptionist will give you a pager to notify you when your family member is coming out of surgery.

We ask that you designate one individual who will call the unit for updates on your loved one’s condition and relay this information to friends and family.

Visiting Hours

Visiting times are limited in the CVICU, and all visitors must call into the unit from the hall phone before entering. This ensures patient privacy. Please keep in mind our patients need to rest and recover. Our suggested visiting hours are set for optimal patient care. They are 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Please note: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM has been set aside for designated nap time to allow for important rest and recovery time.

We request only two members of the immediate family visit at one time and visiting intervals be limited to 30 minutes or less. Visiting the day of surgery will be limited to brief intervals depending upon the individual patient’s condition. Visiting children are restricted to 14 years of age or older, with exceptions considered by the nurse attending the patient. For more information, please call 814-375-7712.
